Just like in English, Spanish speakers have their own abbreviations, numbers and slang for use in text messages, social media posts and online chats. This brief guide explains some of the most common ones.

Spanish texting often uses the same techniques found in English text speak, such as dropping vowels, shortening words and replacing words with single letters or numbers. However, Spanish has some distinctive conventions, particularly the use of x for "por" and q/k for "que."
