HEV

What Does HEV Mean?

HEV means "Hybrid Electric Vehicle."

A HEV is a type of electric vehicle (EV) that uses either petrol or diesel fuel as the main power source for the engine, and also has a small electric motor which assists the internal combustion engine (ICE). Under light load only electricity is consumed. The power for the electric motor is produced by the main engine, therefore HEVs are widely known as "self-charging hybrids."

Unlike a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), a HEV cannot be plugged into the mains and has very limited range on the electric motor.

HEVs are similar to extended range / range extended electric vehicles (EREVs).
