What Does RUD Mean?

RUD means "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly."

The abbreviation RUD is an acronym that stands for "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly." It is a term often used in the aerospace industry, particularly in the context of rocket launches, as a euphemistic or tongue-in-cheek way of describing a catastrophic failure of a rocket, spacecraft, or other aerospace vehicle. In such an event, the vehicle experiences an unintended and rapid disintegration, often due to a malfunction, design flaw, or external factors like weather conditions.

A RUD can occur during any phase of a rocket's flight. It typically results in the loss of the vehicle, its payload, and can sometimes pose a risk to public safety if debris falls back to Earth.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has used RUD on several occasions to describe various incidents involving SpaceX's rockets. One notable instance was on September 1, 2016, when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded on the launch pad during a static fire test, resulting in the loss of the rocket and its payload, the Amos-6 communications satellite. Following the incident, Musk tweeted about the event and referred to it as an "RUD."

Musk has also used the term more casually in interviews and social media posts when discussing rocket development, particularly during the development of the Starship vehicle, which has undergone several test flights and experienced RUDs during some of its early prototypes' landing attempts.
