Pizzagate is a conspiracy theory that emerged in 2016, claiming that Hillary Clinton and her former campaign chair, John Podesta, ran a child sex ring in the basement of the Comet Ping Pong pizzeria, in Washington DC (a premises that doesn't actually have a basement). Prior to the 2016 US presidential elections, the Pizzagate story went viral among supporters of Donald Trump and white supremacists, especially on the social media network 4Chan. As a result of the Pizzagate story, the restaurant's staff and its owner faced a barrage of abuse and death threats on social media. On 4 December 2016, a lone gunman entered the restaurant and fired a shot from an AR-15 assault rifle. No one was hurt. The assailant surrendered to police and stated he'd gone to the restaurant to investigate reports of the child-trafficking ring. Followers of the QAnon conspiracy theory continue to insist that Trump is fighting a war against elite pedophiles. More surprisingly, during the coronavirus lockdowns of 2020, Pizzagate gained traction on other social media platforms, including on TikTok, where some users spread the idea that certain celebrities had been abused as children.
